Yosemite Golfing

For the golf enthusiast, a vacation just isn’t a vacation without teeing up at least once. Lucky for them, Yosemite is home to the Wawona Golf Course, sprawling over 3,050 yards. Boasting the title of the first regulation course in the Sierra Nevada, Wawona was designed and built in 1918. Wawona is a 9-hole, par-35 course that attracts golfers from around the world due to its incredible views of Yosemite. An additional perk is that Wawona is certified by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary and is as eco-conscious as it gets. Zero pesticides are used to maintain the fairways, and the greens are watered with reclaimed gray water.

Golfers of all skill levels will enjoy the challenge of the course as well as the breathtaking views. When your golf game is done, you’ll find plenty nearby to explore, including the Wawona Visitor Center as well as the Yosemite History Center. In the Wawona Visitor Center, you’ll find an information desk as well as an exhibit of Thomas Hill’s art work. The nearby Yosemite History Center allows visitors to travel back in time, featuring exhibits like horse-drawn wagons and blacksmith’s shops.

If you’re looking for more leisurely activities to fill your time in the park, you’ll find excellent opportunities for birdwatching. Over 165 species of birds call Yosemite home, and you might see a variety of birds including acorn woodpeckers, ravens, chickadees, jaybirds, and robins. If you’re really lucky, you might catch a glimpse of more elusive birds like the peregrine falcon, spotted owl, great gray owl, or northern goshawk.

If birdwatching is a bit too leisurely for you, rest assured that the possibilities are endless. Enjoy a scenic walk to Lower Yosemite Falls or take a picnic to Mirror Lake. Fish for trout on Merced River or Tuolumne River. Take a bike ride through the 12 miles of paved trails the park offers. Kayak the serene waters of Tenaya Lake.

And if the quiet mountain air is what draws you to Yosemite, don’t stop at the golf course.
