Popular Rock Climbing Spots in Yosemite
Yosemite’s El Capitan and Half Dome offer some of the most iconic rock climbing opportunities in the world. Both places are enormous, majestic walls of sheer rocks that offer an incredible challenge for experienced climbers. El Capitan is a 3,000-foot granite monolith that requires climbers to use 1,000s of holds and make their way through difficult vertical terrain. Half Dome is great for those more interested in big wall climbing, offering routes up its face as well as other cracks and faces around the structure. It’s no surprise that both of these attractions have made Yosemite one of the foremost destinations for solo climbers worldwide. However, they are not places to leave your first attempt at climbing – you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of experience and skill before taking on either one. So again, please book a tour guide if you plan on learning to climb in Yosemite.

Yosemite is a place of climbing legends and groundbreaking ascents. John Muir made history more than a century ago by completing the first ascent of Cathedral Peak in the 1800s. Then, almost a hundred years later, an incredible feat was completed when Warren Harding, Wayne Merry, and George Whitmore mastered the first regular route of Half Dome in 1957. This inspired other generations to continue pushing themselves and eventually lead to John Bachar’s record-breaking First Ascent of Bachar-Yerian in 1981. All these pioneers have contributed to making climbing in Yosemite extremely popular today, with tour guides and routes available so anyone can experience the joy of scaling its peaks.
